Nov. 10 - Wait for the right tide and time to make the nearby swing bridge which opens on the hour and make the short trip to Charleston and stop at the Charleston Harbor Marina which is at Patriot Point where the Yorktown (WWII aircraft carrier) and WWII submarine and destroyer are moored for touring. Tides run real fast here and despite having tried to time our arrival for slack tide, I didn’t quite get it right and it’s an adventure getting to the gas dock for pump out and then to our… Read the Full Log Entry
Georgetown, SC
Nov 8 - Stay in Georgetown and “see the sights”. Visit the Rice Museum, which is fascinating. Georgetown County was for a long time the largest rice producer in the world and the guided tour of the museum addresses all aspects of the cultivation and commerce of rice. We were guided by a local young woman just out of high school who had never been out of Georgetown County, but was expecting to go on a trip to Montreal and a sailing adventure in the BVI’s. She was very sweet and informative,… Read the Full Log Entry
Southport, NC to Georgetown, SC
Nov. 5 - Well, I was told it had to happen, but I thought “not to me”. Anyway, after a nice start down the ICW in calm clear conditions we run hard aground while we are in the center of the channel right between the red and green markers that we are supposed to be between as the ICW passes the Shallotte Inlet in North Carolina. It’s a falling tide and we’re in trouble. Call Boat US and they’re there promptly. Told us we should have hugged the red markers at that point. Anyway, after… Read the Full Log Entry
Southport/Cape Fear
Oct. 30/Nov. 4 - Stay with family for the week. Get to play some golf and some tennis and otherwise just "chill". Am surprised to be able to get Irene, my 87 year old mother-in-law with two artificial knees, not only onto the boat, but actually down into both cabins. Very nice. Got some tremendous help from Bill Gregory, Marina Manager at South Harbour Village Marina, which we very much appreciated. He’s a gem. Pix of Kryss and Irene, as well as some sunsets from prior anchorages attached.… Read the Full Log Entry
Norfolk to Southport
Oct. 22 - Uneventful motor trip from Great Bridge to Coinjock. Weather’s cold, overcast and clammy. It ain’t Boca! Stay overnight at the Midway Marina and will be off early for a night on the hook in the Alligator River.
Oct. 23 - Down the "ditch", across the Albermarle River in very gusty NW conditions and anchor is East Lake at the mouth of the Alligator River. Course from ICW in the lake is full of crab pots, but once inside, they disappear. Anchor overnight in gusty winds but with… Read the Full Log Entry
To Norfolk and Beyond
Oct. 16 - We head for the Poquoson River, just South of the York River today. Winds are 10 knots or so aft for the first half of the trip and we motor sail at a good clip. When we get to the Wolftrap light they turn light and squirrely and are dead aft, so we take down the sails and motor into the river. It’s finally sunny and warm and the anchorage is pretty. Have to get a whisker pole for these kinds of days when we’re South. Too hard to go wing on wing… Read the Full Log Entry
Solomon's Island and Mill Creek at the Wicomico River
Oct. 6 - Motor sail with light headwinds to Solomon’s Island, MD at mouth of Patuxent River. It’s a large river with lots of history, particularly associated with the War of 1812. Big sailing community. Pull into Zahniser’s Marina before first bridge. It’s a terrific facility and very hospitable. After we get settled we take a walk towards town and wind up at a little place called the Bluefish Café in another marina. Unprepossessing from the outside but… Read the Full Log Entry
St. Michaels
Oct. 3 - Leave on a sunny windless day for St. Michaels passing under the William P. Lane Bridge over the Chesapeake after the fog starts to roll in a bit. Plan to proceed around the south end of Tilghman Island into the Choptank River and then Broad Creek into San Domingo Creek, rather than by way of Eastern Bay, which takes you into St. Michaels proper. We don’t quite get “up the creek” in daylight. The water is quite shallow and the creeks quite narrow, so… Read the Full Log Entry
Chestertown, Maryland
Sept. 23/24/25 - Waited for favorable tide and traveled 12 miles up the winding but generally wide and deep Chester River to Chestertown. Home of Washington College and and largest by far town in County, so large in fact that it actually has a couple of streets and a small natural foods store, but no supermarket, etc. It’s also the “County Seat” with the County Courthouse, which is why there are pix of all these incredibly quaint law offices.
Quite a number of houses date… Read the Full Log Entry
Baltimore and the Corsica River
Sept. 17 - Hung out on the mooring in Georgetown MD. Walked into town and picked up some provisions.
Sept. 18 - Hung out another day; did laundry, etc.
Sept. 19 - Motored against the wind to Baltimore. Have to admit, I didn’t want to go to Baltimore but Kryss needed to get to “civilization”, and glad we did. We are all the way at the head of the harbor (in the “inner harbor”) and anchored next to WWII submarine “Torsk” and 1927 Lightship “Chesapeake”, one pier… Read the Full Log Entry
